Artificial intelligence
AI can inform a decision while also shaping the conditions under which that decision is made.
A beneglyphic lens asks not only what an AI system says, but how the interaction may change what becomes noticeable, credible, urgent, possible, or worth considering next.
What orientation means here
Orientation is the way an interaction changes what appears relevant, credible, urgent, possible, or worth doing next.
Information matters. So does the position from which information is encountered. The same underlying facts can lead to different judgments depending on what is emphasized, what is omitted, how uncertainty is expressed, and which possibilities become easiest to see.
Information focuses on: What am I being told?
Orientation adds another question: What is this interaction making easier—or harder—for me to notice, consider, trust, or do?
Beyond the output
What the AI says matters, but so do what it foregrounds, what it leaves outside the frame, and what the interaction makes easier to consider or do next.
Literal content
The facts, explanation, recommendation, or answer presented directly to the user.
Emphasis
Which facts, risks, possibilities, or interpretations receive the greatest weight and attention.
The surrounding frame
Relevant alternatives, assumptions, uncertainties, or context that may never become salient to the user.
Direction
The conclusion, action, follow-up question, or path that feels most fitting and available because of the interaction.
A developing field
Most human–AI use unfolds as a sequence rather than a single isolated output. Each response can affect the assumptions, attention, wording, and choices that shape what follows.
What the user brings
Wording, expectations, context, goals, and what the user already believes may matter.
What the AI returns
Emphasis, omissions, apparent confidence, structure, and the order in which possibilities appear.
What the interface contributes
Visibility, defaults, repetition, prominence, and the pathways made easiest to continue.
What happens next
A choice, another prompt, a revised belief, a decision, or an action taken outside the system.
AI does not simply enter a decision at the end. Increasingly, it participates in the sequence through which the decision takes shape.
When useful systems still misorient
An AI system can be useful, intelligent, and well-intentioned in its design while still shaping judgment in ways a user does not fully notice.
Fluent presentation may cause a tentative conclusion to feel more settled than the underlying evidence warrants.
A well-developed recommendation may make unmentioned possibilities less psychologically available, even when they remain viable.
Repeated exposure to a framing, phrase, or assumption may influence what gradually begins to feel normal, credible, or inevitable.
When an answer arrives instantly and coherently, the friction that might otherwise prompt further investigation can quietly disappear.
None of these effects requires deception. They can arise from ordinary system design, incomplete context, imperfect outputs, or the natural dynamics of human attention.
Accuracy and orientation
AI systems—particularly generative AI systems—can produce confident but false statements, fabricated citations, unsupported claims, or other inaccurate outputs—commonly described as “AI hallucinations.” These failures can be especially consequential when AI is used to help make important decisions.
But factual accuracy is not the only issue that matters. An AI response can be entirely accurate and still shape attention, confidence, interpretation, or the apparent range of available choices.
A hallucinated answer can mislead because it is false. An accurate answer can still misorient because of how the interaction frames what matters, what receives emphasis, and what becomes easier to consider or do next.
Factual verification, source validation, hallucination testing, and domain expertise can all be necessary parts of responsible AI evaluation. Beneglyphic analysis can incorporate those concerns while also examining a different but complementary question: How is the interaction shaping the conditions under which judgment occurs?
A grounded boundary
An AI interaction may influence what a person notices, trusts, considers, or does next without anyone intending harm. The relevant question is not only why an effect occurred, but whether the interaction changed the field of perception or choice in a meaningful way.
Beneglyphic analysis does not require assuming that an AI system possesses consciousness, intention, or human-like motives. It also does not make factual verification, evidence, domain expertise, or ordinary explanations unnecessary when those explanations are sufficient.
The purpose is narrower: to make orienting conditions easier to notice and evaluate when literal content alone does not fully explain how an interaction is shaping attention, interpretation, or choice.
Preserving agency
Recognizing orienting effects does not require rejecting AI. It means remaining aware of the conditions from which judgment is being formed.
Ask what the interaction has made prominent—and what may still be sitting outside the immediate field of attention.
Distinguish the strength of the underlying support from the confidence, fluency, or polish with which it is delivered.
Consider whether another interpretation, source, option, or path deserves attention before a decision hardens.
When one conclusion begins to feel like the only reasonable path, pause long enough to ask what created that sense of closure.
The goal is not distrust of AI. It is the ability to use AI without quietly surrendering the orientation from which judgment occurs.
For leaders and builders
As AI becomes embedded in decision support, customer interfaces, research, education, strategy, workflows, and recommendation systems, organizations are making choices not only about what their systems know, but about how those systems orient people.
When AI participates in how people perceive options and make consequential decisions, framing, omission, interface design, confidence, and timing can become part of the decision environment itself.
When a Strategic Inquiry may be useful
For leaders, founders, and organizations, the challenge may extend beyond any single AI interaction. A consequential decision, emerging technology, competitive shift, or AI-enabled system can create conditions that are difficult to evaluate through conventional analysis alone.
A Strategic Inquiry is a private starting point for exploring whether a situation may benefit from a deeper orientation-focused examination. The purpose is to clarify the decision environment, identify what may not yet be visible through ordinary analysis, and determine whether further strategic work would be useful.
It is not a generic consulting call and does not presume that every situation requires a beneglyphic interpretation. The first step is simply to understand the situation and determine whether there is a meaningful fit.
The question after the answer
An AI response can leave more behind than information. It can shift attention, widen or narrow the range of possibilities, strengthen confidence, or alter what feels worth pursuing next.
Responsible AI use does not require suspicion of every system. It requires enough awareness to benefit from the intelligence in front of you while remaining the author of your own judgment.
